NEW Backcountry Education Programming!

The Freeskiing Program is excited to introduce an expansion of our Backcountry Education programing.  Last season we offered an introduction to backcountry travel, focusing on safety and team decision making, with our Backcountry Education 100 course.  This season we are expanding our offerings for a deeper look at backcountry travel with the Backcountry 200 course.  We are also offering a new entry point to ski touring with our Middle School Touring program, which would make for a great addition to a middle school winter as it meets every other week on Wednesday’s. Middle School Tour with learn ski touring fundamentals while exploring Emerald Mountain and introducing the skills needed to hike on snow.

Intro to Ski Touring For Middle School (Age 12- 14) **NEW**

Ski touring and winter outdoor fitness is becoming a cornerstone to the Steamboat Springs lifestyle.  This program will serve as an intro to ski touring and some basic backcountry concepts.  Most training sessions will happen every other Wednesday evening at Howelsen Hill.  The group will discuss a piece of back country and ski touring awareness while hiking and exploring Emerald Mountain. Topics will include ski touring or splitboarding gear and skiing technique, terrain management, avalanche gear, and understanding group management/ leadership skills.

Winter Backcountry Education Level 100 (ages 15-19)

The SSWSC Backcountry Program is designed for skiers and riders looking to develop fundamental skills needed for safe, fun, backcountry travel while exploring the backcountry in our region. The program will be led by an experienced backcountry instructor (Lucas Mouttet) and will include AIARE 1 avalanche training certification and wilderness first aid education both in the classroom and in the field. Weekend backcountry trips will include Rabbit Ears Pass, Steamboat Resort side country, and the Hahns Peak area. Weekday evening training sessions will be based out of Howelsen Hill with a focus on education and preparation for the upcoming weekend’s adventure. No previous experience is required, but a willingness to do full day touring trips is required. 

Backcountry Education 200 (ages 15-19)  **NEW for 20-21**

The SSWSC Backcountry Program 200 is designed for skiers and riders with an AIARE level 1 certification looking to further develop and use the fundamental skills needed for safe, fun, backcountry travel while exploring the backcountry in our region. The program will be led by an experienced backcountry instructor (Lucas Mouttet) and will include an AIARE 2 training certification both in the classroom and in the field. Weekend backcountry trips will include Steamboat and Cameron Pass backcountry ski zones. Weekday evening training sessions will be based out of Howelsen Hill with a focus on education and preparation for the upcoming weekend’s adventure. AIARE 1 Certification is required, with a willingness to do full day touring trips is required.
