Alpine Strength & Conditioning

For a deposit on winter 2022/23 alpine competitive program fees the SSWSC alpine athlete can take part in directed and supervised summer strength and conditioning. These programs are designed to give ski racers off-season guidance and coaching in off-snow preparation for winter training, as well as establish a strong strength and conditioning base for higher intensity training in the fall. Strong and well-conditioned ski racers are able to maintain their technique and a fast racing line in progressively more difficult situations, recover more quickly from long on-snow training and competition days, and decrease the chance of injury. Coaching will focus on proper movement patterns emphasizing a full range of motion. Coaches will work with athletes participating in summer sports to manage their training load while providing appropriate preparation for ski racing. The program will accommodate family vacation. It will be creative, fun, difficult, diverse and build towards the athlete’s racing goals for next season.

 

High School Summer PE (Class of 2023 ONLY)

Steamboat Springs High School has made a change to their PE requirement that will come into effect with the class of 2024 (this will not apply to the class of 2023). The high school’s PE requirement is .5 credits (one semester) next year, and an SSWSC summer strength and conditioning program will no longer be accepted to satisfy this credit. The .5 PE course must be taken through the high school. Students who will be graduating in 2023 will still be able to use their SSWSC summer S&C hours to satisfy this requirement and students who have already received PE credit from their SSWSC S&C program will not lose the credit they earned. Check with your school counselor with questions about credits.

Eligible SSWSC athletes will log their summer training weekly, and must report a minimum of 50 hours during the course period from June 6 through August 19, to receive credit for the class. This program will be supervised by SSWSC Strength and Conditioning Director Sady Tobin, but training will take place with the athlete’s coach during regularly scheduled training sessions.

The cost for this course is $50, in addition to your discipline’s normal SSWSC summer program fees (see sport sections later in this guide), and you must select the Summer PE option when you register for your summer programming. Do not register with the High School.

U14
Fundamentals of Strength & Conditioning

Recommended for athletes who plan to participate in U14 Cross Country, U14 Alpine, U15 Moguls, U14 Ski Jumping or Nordic Combined, or for athletes born in 2009 or earlier in the following programs: Snowboard Junior Team, Snowboard Junior Ability Extension, Freeski Junior Team and Tele Devo Race.

An introduction to the weight room covering everything from weight room etiquette, how to read prescribed programming, weight lifting technique, and much more to create a solid understanding of why training off-snow is important. Created for athletes who are in the growth phase of peak height velocity, this program is an essential piece to build athlete confidence in the weight room, understand body awareness and continue to dial in proper movement patterns to help avoid injuries. A movement screen analysis will be performed at the onset of the program to understand the fundamental role that movement patterns play in athletes’ athletic goals and daily movement.

*The second Friday in each session will be a bonus Fundamentals Field Day (trampolines, swimming, hikes, ect.)

U12
FunFit

Recommended for athletes 10-12 years of age who plan to participate in U12 Cross Country, U12 Alpine Racing, U12 Ski Jumping or Nordic Combined, Devo Free, Boardriderz, Junior Ability Snowboard, Tele Devo, or AMP.

FunFit is a program designed around developing sound fundamental skills in body movement, kinesthetic awareness, strength, and improving cardiovascular endurance for aspiring athletes. During these sessions the focus will be to keep the FUN in fundamentals! By providing games that allow athletes to move in multi-planar motions, interact with other athletes, and develop confidence, all while learning the underlying themes of movement patterns, proper form and technique. Better movement quality during childhood prepares young athletes to better manage the growth disruptions during puberty. This can in turn help avoid injuries and keep athletes playing safely.

LOCATION: All FunFit sessions will be at Colorado Mountain College (CMC)
