Freeskiing

Devo Free Freeski, ages 10-12

This program continues to develop the technical base of overall skiing skills from the U10 programs but leans more toward freeskiing disciplines of halfpipe, slopestyle and big mountain, as well as moguls. It is designed to foster the desire for learning and exploration in the sport. Training includes slopestyle, halfpipe, moguls, big mountain, powder, trees, jumps, gates and steeps.  DEVO Free includes competition options. Skiers are encouraged to participate in the Steamboat Cup Series. Athletes interested in a more competitive experience can participate in selected USASA slopestyle and halfpipe events, IFSA Big Mountain events, and/or Rocky Mountain Freestyle moguls events. This program is scheduled for three days a week on snow, and there is an option to add a fourth day with an emphasis either on freeskiing or moguls disciplines through the DEVO Free + program. DEVO Free +  athletes also participate in additional acrobatic and movement skills training to support their development. The DEVO Free + program is geared toward motivated young skiers with a deeper focus towards freeskiing or moguls. DEVO Free + skiers are encouraged to get a taste of competition at regional level events throughout the winter. At this age and stage it is our goal to help create a love for the sport and a love for the process of improving!

*12 year olds interested in Freeskiing competition are encouraged to register for the Junior Freeskiing Teams*

  • Minimum skiing requirement: Must be able to ski blue / black runs confidently with an interest in skiing across the whole mountain.
  • Equipment requirements: Alpine ski equipment and helmet. DEVO Free + participants should have twin tips for freeski or mogul-specific skis depending on which discipline they are drawn towards.
  • Season pass information: Must have ski passes to Steamboat Ski Resort and Howelsen Hill
  • Competition information: SSWSC will choose selected events from the Rocky Mountain Freestyle (moguls), USASA (halfpipe and slopestyle) and IFSA (big mountain) competition series that will be staffed. To maximize training opportunities, we may not attend all competitions.
  • Licensing requirements: Skiers do not need a license for the Steamboat Ski Cup Series, but a USASA license is required for USASA slopestyle and halfpipe competitions, an IFSA license is required for Big Mountain events, and a US Ski and Snowboard membership is required for Rocky Mountain Freestyle mogul competitions.
