Ski Jumping & Nordic Combined Programs
The SSWSC Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined programs are as old as the SSWSC itself, and are currently the largest programs of their kind in the world, with more than 170 athletes participating from ages 4-20. Since 1932, the SSWSC has had a ski jumper or Nordic Combined athlete represented in every Winter Olympics, with the exception of 1936, 42 Olympians in total. Howelsen Hill in the heart of Steamboat boasts one of the largest selections of ski jumps in North America, with seven jumps ranging from a “bump jump” for beginners to the Olympic-sized HS100 and HS127-meter jumps. Howelsen Hill also offers 25 kilometers of varied and challenging homologated cross country training and competition ski trails for Nordic Combined athletes. SSWSC’s professional and experienced coaching staff progress kids through a proven progression that moves them up little by little from the smallest ‘bump jump’ to the largest jumps by their early teens. The focus is always first and foremost on safety, having fun, skill development, character, and respect for the sport. Athletes can choose to focus solely on ski jumping or participate in the full sport of nordic combined, which means learning ski jumping as well as cross country skiing. In order to make the sport more accessible, SSWSC maintains a full inventory of high-end ski jumping equipment that is included with the program fees for U14 & younger programs. SSWSC’s summer training facilities include HS 75 and HS 45 plastic jumps for training for competitive program summer training as well as an HS 8 jump with plastic to allow U10 and U12 athletes to try out jumping in the summer. Combined with SSWSC’s strength and conditioning center at Howelsen Hill, miles of trails and roads surrounding Steamboat for dryland training, and training camps in the US and Europe, SSWSC offers age-appropriate training year-round for both progression to the highest level and personal development through sport.
