Snowboarding

The snowboard department had a busy summer with a total of 96 Skateboard sign ups and 52 trampoline participants. We are gearing up for fall training. Be sure to register ASAP to receive important information.

Thedo Remmelink, Pro Am Race Head Coach has been planning fall camps and a busy winter schedule along with Erik Gunderson leading the Snowboardcross Program. Maddy Schaffrick is returning as Head Coach to Junior and Senior Team with her level 300 coach accreditation and working on our Park City Air Bag Camp, set for September 19th-22nd. Trevor “Apple” Mekelburg had a great summer of skateboarding and is ready for another fun season with the Boardriderz crew.

We are thrilled to announce Sasha Nations (photo attached) as the Ability Program Head Coach. Sasha will be overseeing the Junior Ability and Senior Ability program. The Ability programs are intended for riders who are looking for advanced snowboard training in a fun, recreational environment.  Participants will learn advanced freeride skills as well as riding techniques for halfpipe, slopestyle and snowboardcross. Sasha has managed countless athletes, athletic programs, and coaches in all facets of the sport.  Many of her athletes have gone on to professional careers, while others have become outstanding individuals taking on other challenges.  She is a coaches coach, holding down a level 300 USSA certification and educating coaches for the USSA/USASA.  Sasha has a business mind that has helped athletes land global contracts as well as their first shop sponsor.  She is dedicated to helping the athlete bring out the best in themselves through demanding accountability.  She has a long history producing top notch training programs and camps with Team Summit.

Upcoming Equipment Events:

On Tuesday, September 3rd, we will have our annual, informal “ski swap” in the fireplace room at Howelsen Hill.  This swap is your chance to show up and sell, buy, barter and trade with other athletes and parents from the SSWSC.  Doors will open when groups wrap up with dryland at 6, and we will close up at 7.  Fast and furious.  Don’t forget to seek the appropriate council before hopping on that incredible deal from another athlete in the club.  But do look for deals.  As a parent, this is also likely your best opportunity to both “pay it forward” and see what value you can find in your old equipment!  The club doesn’t make a dime on this event.  It’s strictly a convenience offered to facilitate savings.  Coaches are there to help, and can help with pricing too if you’re unsure.

On Thursday, September 5th, many ski racing industry leaders will converge on the High School for our annual fit and buy night.  Hours will be from 5-7 PM.  Most athletes will come directly from dryland with their coaches.  But many others have other activities and sports that time of year and will need your support getting to the event.

For them, and for the health of ski racing in the town of Steamboat Springs, please find a way to get all athletes to this event between 5-7 on Thursday, 9/5.

Special race pricing will be available from all manufacturers present on the 5th.  This is the best published pricing you will find on new equipment for the 19-20 season.  Period.  We are working to have vendors here for all types of equipment and soft goods beyond skis, boots, and bindings as well.

ANNUAL FLIGHT CAMP ENDS SUMMER SEASON FOR JUMPERS/NORDIC COMBINERS

Seventeen athletes’, fourteen parents and three coaches from the SSWSC Ski Jumping & Nordic Combined program ended the summer season by participating in the club’s annual Flight Camp at the Utah Olympic Park in Park City, August 12-17. The trip started off with roller skiing, runs, hikes, swimming and fun activities followed by a night of camping at Deerlodge Park on the Yampa River. Once in Park City, the camp offered seven jumping sessions throughout the week, flexibility, imitation and video sessions, an afternoon at the Jordanelle Reservior Water Park and finished with a team BBQ on the last night. Our goals for the camp are to get in one last intense block of jump training before going back to school, logging lots of jumps and jumping bigger jumps for the first time. A few of our younger athletes were traveling to the UOP for the first time and a number of PR’s (personal records) were set during the camp. Athletes at Flight Camp ranged in age from 8 to 18 while most of the club’s older J/NC athletes attended a camp in Central Europe. In all, over twenty-five J/NC athletes participated in training camps in August for the second year in a row. With a successful summer of training behind us, the SSWSC J/NC program is looking forward to and is primed for a successful Fall/Winter season. Great job team!
