Telemark skiing has been a part of the Steamboat community since the early 1900’‘s but it wasn’‘t until 2001 that SSWSC introduced telemark specific programs. Steamboat is known as the telemark capital of North America. This reputation is well deserved; in recent years a majority of the United States Telemark Ski Team members and US National Champions have been SSWSC skiers. Additionally, the current US Ski Team coach, Ty Upson, is a telemark race coach for SSWSC and Telemark Program Director.
The telemark team consists of a development group and a race group. The purpose of the development group is to build fundamental and solid skiing skills to be able to ski all terrain and all snow conditions. We are fortunate to have a highly experienced staff of coaches certified by the Professional Ski Instructors of America and a former competitor who are all current on modern telemark skiing. Check out the coaches bios and notice the multiple decades of teaching and coaching experience.
For those development skiers who have an interest in racing, there is no better place to be than Steamboat! The current race team consists of 4 US Ski team members, of which 2 are current US National Champions, and 3 US B Team members. One of the annual highlights of the winter for both the racing and development groups is when everyone skis together. Only in Steamboat can young telemark skiers ski with the best in the world.
