Murphy Roberts Holiday Classic Brings Elite Alpine Racing Back to Howelsen Hill

The Murphy Roberts Holiday Classic returned to Steamboat Springs December 19–20, 2025, bringing elite alpine ski racing, festive community energy, and standout performances by Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club (SSWSC) athletes to Howelsen Hill. Now in its 24th year, the Holiday Classic featured two days of slalom racing with top regional, collegiate, and nationally ranked athletes from across the U.S. and nearly 15 other countries. SSWSC athletes made their presence felt throughout the night. SSWSC U18 skier Caley Goforth won the U18 women’s category. In the U18 men’s race, SSWSC athlete Matthew Kafka earned a podium finish in second place. Schuyler Biglow was awarded one of the three $1,000 scholarships in honor of Murphy Roberts.

Season Kicks Off with Winter Start for Ski Jumping Nordic Combined Athletes

The 2025-2026 competition season is officially underway for SSWSC ski jumping and nordic combined athletes following the first home event of the year at Howelsen Hill, Winter Start, December 13. After a challenging lead-up, the annual Winter Start competitions came together seamlessly. Despite difficult weather and a number of logistical hurdles, our dedicated crew prepared the venue just in time for several productive training days and one outstanding day of competition.

Alpine Athletes Excel at U16 Alpine SYNC Cup at Loveland

December 13-15, the U16 alpine team headed to Loveland to compete in their first races of the season. Our U16 alpine racers competed in two slalom events and one giant slalom. Excitement was in the air by the team, and some first race jitters, but the team stepped up and performed admirably despite early-season struggles with Mother Nature. The U16 coaches are excited for what is ahead for this crew and proud of their achievements this past weekend.

US Moguls Selections at Winter Park

Moguls athletes Anouk Bradley and Gigi Lobeck headed to US Selections, December 9-14, to compete against the best mogul skiers in the country. With Winter Park having the only mogul course in the US, athletes were scrambling to hone their skills and put out their best run for the judges. Never having been to a US Selections competition before, Bradley and Lobeck kept their heads about them, soaked in the excitement from the high-level skiing, and focused on themselves.

Snowboard Cross Team kicks off NorAm season in Waterville

The SBX Team headed East to Waterville, New Hampshire, during the first week of December to kick off the training and competition season alongside the US Snowboard Team. With the Milan Cortina Games approaching, the US Team was looking for one last training opportunity at home before kicking off the World Cup season in Europe. It was a great opportunity for the SSWSC crew to get to train alongside some of the best athletes in the world - not only to watch how they operate on track, but also to pick up a few pointers from the athletes themselves. Ethan Deters got a few notes from fellow Michigander, and Olympic Gold Medalist, Nick Baumgartner, while Brady Burton got some razzing from US Team Athlete Jake Vedder for not taking better care of his boards (Burton rides one of Vedder's past race boards).

Alpine U16 Loveland Fall Camps

The U16 Alpine team has been firing on all cylinders these past few weekends, taking full advantage of prime on-snow training at Loveland Valley. Huge thanks to Loveland Ski Club for their outstanding snowmaking and for creating an ideal venue for teams to sharpen their slalom fundamentals and gate work. The U16 athletes have made the most of it, showing impressive progress, strong focus, and intentional effort every session.

Snowboard Team kicks off the season with a trip to the Woodward Copper Barn

25 athletes from our Devo Team, Jr Team, and Big Mountain programs headed to The Barn at Woodward Copper for an early-season team trip. We booked a private party which not only kept costs lower for families, but included our own dedicated Woodward coach. Woodward Coach Caleb led our Devo Team athletes through a backflip progression — showing firsthand how we can break down intimidating and scary tasks into simple, achievable steps.

Ski Jumping & Nordic Combined Athletes Soar at Annual Mini-Camp

The ski jumping and nordic combined program wrapped up its summer/fall training season with a high-flying finale: the Annual Mini-Camp held October 16–19 at Howelsen Hill. This four-day camp brought together nearly 50 enthusiastic athletes from Steamboat Springs and our friends at the Park City Ski & Snowboard Club for an unforgettable experience filled with skill-building, camaraderie, and fun.
