This season, Donoban Fuentes joined the U10 Alpine program as a member of Integrated Community. He is supported by his dedicated partner, Marissa Holmes, whose commitment to Donoban’s development and well-being has been instrumental in helping him thrive and feel connected within the Steamboat community. Marissa ensures Donoban is present at training three days a week, and her ongoing support has played a significant role in his growth both on and off the hill.
Since joining the team, Donoban has made a remarkable impact. He consistently demonstrates positivity, inclusivity, and genuine teamwork toward all of his fellow athletes. In particular, he formed a special connection with teammate Ben Middlemas. Donoban naturally stepped into a supportive role, offering encouragement, celebrating Ben’s progress, and helping to build his confidence. His kindness did not go unnoticed.
Ben’s parents were so touched by Donoban’s compassion and sportsmanship that they reached out, hoping to find a way to express their gratitude. They shared that Donoban had mentioned how much he wished for a pair of Grass Sticks, and they wanted to make that wish come true.
To support this thoughtful gesture, I connected with Andrew Beckler, founder of Grass Sticks and former SSWSC coach, to inquire about a potential industry discount for the Middlemas family on the bamboo poles. Andrew’s response was immediate and generous: “I’ll take care of it.”
Just a few days later, in a moment that perfectly captured the heart of our program, Ben surprised Donoban before U10 training with a brand-new pair of Grass Sticks, custom-engraved with his name.
