Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club hosted the USASA Rocky Mountain Series Slalom and Giant Slalom races at Howelsen Hill on February 14, and it was a perfect day to be away from the holiday crowds at Steamboat Resort and instead over at quiet Howelsen Hill, soaking up sunny, warm conditions. We kicked things off with two individual Giant Slalom races, with Thedo Remmelink setting a strong course with help from the ProAm Alpine Race Team and Jr Team’s Phineas Walters. The course held up great for the first race before growing more demanding as the day wore on, challenging athletes with icy ruts up high and slushy berms down low. After GS wrapped up, Thedo reset the hill into a technical Slalom course that demanded good snowboarding.
SSWSC Snowboard had over 30 athletes compete and It was exciting to welcome several first-time USASA racers: Odin Stark, Chase McDougall, Landon Fisbeck, Lily Anderson, Molly McDonough, Maddie Schield, and Hadley Mahon. Highlights included reconnecting with friends from Summit County, racing under bluebird skies, and of course, the ever-popular raffle. Maddie Schield scored a new pair of snowboard boots, Luke Feyen won new bindings, and Phineas Walters took home the grand prize – a new snowboard. On the results side, Phineas Walters and Abe Cronkhite each claimed 1st place in all four races, a testament to the time and effort they’ve invested in training with Thedo. Team SSWSC had an incredible medal haul, bringing home 25 golds, 21 silvers, and 24 bronzes (if our count is correct).
