Cross Country Programs

Cross country skiing is the original form of skiing, practiced around the world for thousands of years. Early settlers to Routt County used cross country skis to get to school and for recreation in the winter, and SSWSC cross country program carries on this tradition of exploring winter on skis.

Today, SSWSC cross country offers a full range of programs, including introductory programs for children as young as four, competitive programs for high school and post-graduate athletes pursuing their individual potential, and adults skiing for fitness and fun. Youth programs for kids age 4-10 introduce and develop fundamental skills through play and exploration in a welcoming environment. By late elementary and middle school, the goal is to introduce children to the thrill of cross country skiing, skill enhancement, physical training, and racing.

SSWSC’s competitive program for high school and post-graduate athletes provides comprehensive year-round coaching and training that makes the most of Steamboat’s four cross country centers, early-season skiing in October/November at Bruce’s Train on nearby Rabbit Ears Pass, as well as dryland training on the trails and roads surrounding Steamboat. For adults looking to continue to learn and stay fit in this lifelong sport, SSWSC offers a popular adult program twice a week throughout the winter.
