More Scholarship Opportunities

The Moose Barrows Athletic Achievement Scholarship is awarded annually to SSWSC athletes ages 13 and older who qualify for Junior Nationals, National Championships or similar level or higher competitions. The application period begins in February and scholarships are awarded in March.

A native of Steamboat Springs, Moose relied on help from members of the Steamboat Springs community to support him when he was on the national team, so Moose, along with two friends, Paul Thayer, and Hank Kashiwa, hosted a golf tournament to bring in funding from Steamboat and around the country and create a youth scholarship fund to support young Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club athletes. These funds ensure that future local high-potential athletes receive the same level of community support that Moose received when he was young. The funds will also help young athletes take part in programming, training, travel, and competitions that they may not otherwise be able to afford. Since its inception 45 years ago, the tournament has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to support young athletes. The Moose’s Loose Golf Tournament will be hosted annually in his honor and will continue to raise funds to help young athletes.

Moose Barrows Memorial Scholarship Fund

To sustain Moose’s legacy, specifically this scholarship funding, SSWSC is working with the Barrows family and Moose’s many friends, teammates, and colleagues to establish a dedicated fund within the SSWSC endowment to support scholarships in perpetuity. The fund and the annual golf tournament will create sustainable funding for the Moose Barrows Athletic Achievement Scholarships to support young athletes for years to come. DONATE TO THE FUND

The Berge Family Scholarship is a new scholarship awarded each year in the spring. The scholarship is supported by the Berge Family Endowed Scholarship Fund. The scholarship offered for 2025 is $2,500.

The Berge Family Scholarship Criteria:

• Male or Female FIS-level Alpine athletes who has been fully enrolled in SSWSC Alpine Program for at least 2 seasons
• Merit-based scholarship for high-achieving and high-potential alpine competitor also representing financial need
• Athlete represents outstanding personal character and the core values of SSWSC

The Berge Family Endowed Scholarship Fund was established with a $50,000 gift from the long-time supporter and Foundation Board Member Paul Berge and his family, providing scholarships to high-performing alpine athletes.

The Carl’s Cup Scholarship is for SSWSC male or female athletes aged 10 to 17 years in any discipline who are currently active in the SSWSC programs and who would like to participate in out-of-town competitive events, but need financial support to do so. This scholarship is funded by local businesses, corporations, and life-long ski racers through their participation in or donations to the Carl’s Cup Scholarship Race Series. This scholarship aims to provide an opportunity for young athletes to participate in out-of-town races and help ease the financial burden for the families of these athletes so that any athlete that wants to travel to a competition can do so. Applications usually open in January and awards are made in late February. This year the Carl’s Cup Scholarship Application is due in the SSWSC office by February 25, 2026. The Clint Devin Memorial Scholarship was founded through a partnership of Steamboat Orthopaedic & Spine Institute and the Devin family to memorialize Dr. Clint Devin’s tremendous contribution to spine surgery. The scholarship supports college-bound high school seniors or postgraduates who are or were active members of the SSWSC through high school and are pursuing an undergraduate education toward a career in the medical field.

APPLY AT YAMPA VALLEY COMMUNITY FOUNDATION

Joe and Sara Bishop have been passionate about SSWSC and the athletes ever since their sons Hunter and Phillip skied with the club. Over the past 20 years, they generously contributed to numerous fundraising events and SSWSC projects. Two $2,000 scholarships are awarded annually to SSWSC student-athletes ages 12-18 in honor of Joe and Sara Bishop at the Winter Carnival Opening Ceremony.

The Barbara Bolding/Jim Grew Snow Ski Scholarship for SSWSC Female Collegiate Skiing Graduates was established by Jim Grew to honor his deceased partner Barbara Bolding. This scholarship is awarded each year to a SSWSC female alumna who has completed her skiing at the collegiate level to be applied toward future academic expenses. This scholarship of $5,000 is awarded to the skier who best represents high achievement in academics (30%), sport (30%) and community service/volunteerism while at SSWSC and through her college experience (20%) as well as need (20%). Application period is in May, awards made in June.

Thanks to the generous support of the Lobos Ronin Fund, the Lobos Ronin scholarship is available exclusively for snowboard athletes who apply for a Winter Program Fee Scholarship. Snowboard athletes who apply for the Winter Program Fee Scholarship will be automatically eligible for consideration for these additional funds. The additional financial support is a testament to the Lobos Ronin Fund’s commitment to nurturing talent, helping individuals pursue their passion for snowboarding. This scholarship aims to ease the family budget pressures that may come with pursuing competition and travel opportunities.

The Bill Michalek Scholarship is awarded in the spring to two athletes in any SSWSC program between the ages of 13 and 18 years old. The scholarship fund was established in 1997 to provide funding to a deserving middle or high school student from Routt County with financial need who is involved in the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club. Financial need, athletic achievement and community involvement will be considered. The $2500 scholarship will be used to help cover travel and program expenses.

The Neville Family Scholarship is awarded each spring to deserving Routt/Moffat County SSWSC graduating seniors to help cover college expenses. The funds are made available through a donation from Steamboat locals, the Neville Family.

The Nick Would Foundation has established two annual scholarship awards for freeski athletes for the 2024-2025 season — The Nick Would Athletic Achievement Scholarship and additional scholarship funding to be applied to the Winter Program Fee Scholarship. Freeski athletes are required to fill out the Nick Would Foundation Application when applying for The Nick Would Foundation Athletic Achievement Scholarship or for financial support in addition to the Winter Program Fee Scholarship. SSWSC Freeski athletes must be in middle or high school between 13 and 18 years old and demonstrate the qualities Nick brought to SSWSC — integrity, passion, gratitude, community, and a deep appreciation for outdoor pursuits to qualify for these scholarships.
