The SSWSC ski jumping and nordic combined team recently returned from their annual EuroCamp, a high-level training experience that took athletes across three countries: Slovenia, Austria, and Italy.
Over the course of the camp, our athletes completed 13 jump sessions across four venues throughout the Alps, providing a concentrated dose of training and competitive experience at the conclusion of a long summer season.
One of the highlights of the camp was a unique opportunity to train in a specialized wind tunnel designed specifically for ski jumping. The session allowed athletes to gain the equivalent of approximately two years of flight experience in a single afternoon. Unlike a traditional wind tunnel, this facility can adjust the angle of the tunnel to replicate the pitch of a ski jumping landing hill, allowing athletes to practice their in-flight position in conditions that closely resemble those they experience on the hill.
The controlled environment gave athletes the opportunity to fine-tune their movements and develop a stronger sense of their body position and balance without the fear of falling. The benefits were immediately apparent, with coaches observing noticeable improvements in technique when the athletes returned to the hill the following day.
While training was the primary focus, the athletes also had opportunities to experience the culture, food, and landscapes of the region. The team explored hiking trails, visited mountain huts in the Dolomites, toured historic buildings in small towns, and capped the trip with a day exploring Venice, Italy.
EuroCamp provided a valuable combination of high-level training, new experiences, and team bonding, giving the athletes an opportunity to finish their summer season with both meaningful development and lasting memories.
