The Alpine Team just wrapped up the Switzerland Camp and Alpine Program Director Tyler Shepherd reflected on what he called one of the best camps he’s had the privilege to be part of. “The energy, focus, and camaraderie displayed by our athletes over the past few weeks made this trip unforgettable,” Shepherd said, adding that the coaching staff could not be more thrilled with the progress seen across the board.
Time on the glacier was exceptionally productive. The team capitalized on 6 outstanding days of Giant Slalom (GS) training, making noticeable technical leaps. They also logged 3 solid days of Slalom (SL) training, which brought more challenging, warmer temperatures—giving athletes a valuable opportunity to build resilience and adapt to tough conditions.
A special shoutout goes to the guest athletes, Eden Demino, Griffin Wickstrom, Logan Fischer, and Lake Skytta. Welcoming them into the group was a highlight, and the immediate bond and team spirit that developed across the entire squad was incredible to watch.
This camp could not have happened without the tireless effort, energy, and dedication of the staff: Chad Wolk, Noah Freed, and Ben Brown. They worked around the clock, both on and off the mountain, to ensure athletes received high-level coaching, proper dryland training, and a safe, supportive environment. “I am deeply grateful for their hard work,” Shepherd said.
Bringing Back the Sister City Roots and Local Connections
Set against the breathtaking backdrop of Saas-Fee, the trip provided unique opportunities beyond training. Shepherd had the honor of sitting down with the leadership of Saas-Fee Bergbahnen and local civic leaders to reactivate the Steamboat–Saas-Fee Sister City connection. He extended a big thank you to Werner Lippuner for helping spearhead the initiative. “Their enthusiasm matches ours, and I am very encouraged by the potential joint opportunities on the horizon for both of our communities,” Shepherd said.
The team also enjoyed a fantastic joint picnic with the local Ski Club Allalin. Shepherd had a wonderful dialogue with their club president and head coach about mountain operations and athlete development. “While our venues differ, we face many of the same core challenges—and their desire to collaborate going forward was inspiring,” he said. “We look forward to continuing this relationship year after year.”
Why We Do What We Do
“At the end of the day, as coaches, we do this because we love the sport, we love coaching, and we love watching young athletes fall in love with the process of getting better,” Shepherd said.
He also acknowledged the sacrifices made by parents. “We know that sending your child to an international camp is a significant financial and personal sacrifice,” he said. “We sincerely appreciate the investment you make in your athlete’s journey. The athletic gains made here were substantial, but the life skills, independence, and perspective they take away from an experience like this are priceless.”
Shepherd thanked everyone for their trust and support in making the camp a resounding success. The team can’t wait to see everyone back on snow in Steamboat very soon.
