Four SSWSC U16 athletes and eight U14 athletes traveled to compete in the Rocky/Central U14/U16 Showdown from March 1–3, 2026, in Winter Park, CO. The event brought together athletes from across the Rocky and Central regions who did not qualify for their championship events, offering a chance to race hard, build new friendships, and enjoy one of the most spirited competitions of the season. The atmosphere is reminiscent of the old Prater Cup—equal parts competition, camaraderie, and fun.
The event begins with athletes being sorted into “nations,” mixing competitors from different clubs and regions. Over the next few days, these newly formed teams work together, cheering each other on and collecting points for their nation while still receiving support from their home clubs and coaches. At the end of the series, athletes are recognized not only for their individual performances but also for the overall Nations Cup standings.
SSWSC athletes wasted no time making their mark. In the opening event, the U14 women led the charge with Charlie McCleary skiing to an impressive 4th place, followed closely by Piper Christopher in 10th. The U14 men also delivered a strong performance, highlighted by Jackson Guggisberg’s silver-medal finish. Hogan Walker placed 8th, while Alex Deanzer and Wyatt Sill rounded out the top group with 10th and 11th place finishes. For the U16s, William Volk skied with confidence and determination to finish a strong 8th.
The Slalom event brought even more excitement. The U14 women put on a dominant performance, with Charlie McCleary capturing gold and Piper Christopher taking silver, while Elise Kelley added another solid result for SSWSC with a 10th-place finish. Not to be outdone, the U14 men followed suit with Hogan Walker racing to victory, Jackson Guggisberg finishing 3rd, Henry Branham in 5th, and Alex Deanzer in 6th. In the U16 category, Thacher Starrett demonstrated impressive precision and composure to claim a silver medal.
Beyond the results, the Showdown delivered exactly what it promises each year: great racing, new friendships, and a chance for athletes to experience the fun and spirit of team competition on a larger stage.
