Sunday, August 31, was a perfect morning for running – sunny and 68°F. SSWSC Cross Country athletes took to the line for the 10k @10,000ft. A long-standing race in the Steamboat Springs Running Series that is now a shared event with the Running Series Coordinators and members of Steamboat Nordic(Bruce’s Trail Overseers) joining forces to stage the event. The race starts and finishes at the Rabbit Ears Monument near Dumont Lake. The 10k winds its way past Dumont Lake along the Continental Divide before heading back. The 5k branches off early and takes runners towards the Rabbit Ears monolith. It is a trail race, and it is a hard one. SSWSC athletes displayed their running prowess with impressive finishes.
Alumni Athlete, Henry Magill, took top SSWSC honors in fourth place. Followed by cross country coaches, Chase High in 5th and Josh Smullin in 6th. Crossing the line in 8th for the males was Henry Patten. On his heels in 9th was LP Brinkman. Luke Hodge rounded out the SSWSC male group in 30th place. On the women’s side, SSWSC’s Lylah Keller raced to second place. Maia McGinnis-Smith was 8th, followed by XC Coach, Ivy Eski in 9th, and Tig Loomis in 10th. A little further back was Sophia McGinnis-Smith in 12th. Leah Miller in 16th. And Anna Rhodes is 18th. In the 5k race, SSWSC XC athletes Livia Spector and Klara Novotny finished first and second, respectively, in the female division. 11-year-old XC athlete, Axel Loomis, was the fourth male and 5th overall—impressive running by our athletes.
