Junior Ability Snowboard, ages 14 & younger

This program is intended for riders who are looking to enhance their snowboard skills and all mountain riding; with a primary focus being placed on FUN.  Athletes will learn progressive freeride skills and be introduced to all the different snowboarding disciplines including giant slalom, slalom, halfpipe, slopestyle, rail jams and snowboardcross. These riders are encouraged to participate in our Community Jam Series and/or some USASA regional series. Competition is not required, but is encouraged. Dryland training is offered prior to getting on-snow. Dryland sessions are optional, as we support athletes participating in other sports during the fall. Dryland sessions are focused on physical literacy, improving fitness, camaraderie and fun.

  • Minimum riding requirement: Ability to ride aggressively on black terrain and desire to improve
  • Equipment requirements: Participants need snowboard equipment, and a helmet. An all terrain board is recommended.
  • Season pass information: Passes to Steamboat Ski Resort and Howelsen Hill required
  • This program is for riders through 7th grade

Junior Ability Extension (8th and 9th graders)

Last season we introduced the extension program as a bridge to transition Jr Ability and Jr Team riders into our Senior programs. This program is for 8th and 9th graders, allowing athletes to leave school early and meet with their coach at Steamboat Resort, rather than Howelsen Hill. The athletes still have an opportunity to ride with the crew at Howelsen if they would like, but in JA Extension, we focus on bringing an athlete’s specific skills to the larger features and different terrain and environments available at Steamboat Resort. Dryland training is offered prior to getting on-snow. These sessions are optional, as we support athletes participating in other sports during the fall. Dryland sessions are focused on physical literacy, improving fitness, camaraderie and fun. Participants must be enrolled in early release from SSMS or SSHS.
