Snowboarding

Steamboat hosted three (technically 4) USASA Rocky Mountain Series events over this past weekend (Feb 29 and March 1). They went off without a hitch and the kids had a blast! It was our final regional competitions for the season, and the athlete’s last chance to earn points that will qualify them to USASA Nationals in Copper happening March 27-April 2. Athletes from all over the region came to participate. During the day on Saturday, 2/29, Giant Slalom and Slalom took place on the face of Howelsen, and by night we had a Rail Jam in the terrain park at Howelsen. Sunday, 3/1, we had our Halfpipe Competition in the Bashor Halfpipe on Steamboat Resort. Because the vents were here on our home turf, a lot more local athletes were able to compete. It was a great opportunity for some of our younger athletes who wanted to get a taste of competition to do just that.

Freeskiing

This past weekend wrapped up our final USASA competitions of the season and it was a home event here in Steamboat. We started things off at Howelsen Hill for a Rail Jam on Saturday night. There were 82 competitors both skiing and snowboarding and our Freeskiing Team represented us well with podium finishes from David Schlicht (1st) and Silas Leeson (2nd) as well as Logan Spiegel and Koen Stroock putting on a nice show for the crowd. The following day the Half Pipe competition was held on Steamboat Resort in Bashor Bowl. Even though the light was flat, the snow held off and everyone skied great. In 14-15 Men the team finished 123 with David Schlicht (1st), Wiley Wagner (2nd), and Owen Taylor (3rd). In 12-13 we had a first time USASA competitor Rowan Tolstedt finish 7th and Koen Stroock finishing 6th. Now we will wait to see who has qualified for USASA Nationals which will be held at Copper Mountain April 3rd-9th.
