Nordic Combined

This past weekend the ski jumping/nordic combined team brought 14 athletes from U10’s - U16’s to the Norge ski club in Fox River Grove, Illinois, for a 2-day ski jumping competition.  The jump facility was in perfect condition, and the athletes had two great training days before our competitions on Saturday and Sunday. As a result, athletes made some significant improvements in their jumping. It definitely makes a difference for these athletes to jump in the thicker air than Steamboat’s thin air. On Saturday, we had a big day as athletes competed on the K10, K25, K40, and K70. SSWSC athletes crushed it on all the hills, especially the K40 competition, with Sawyer Graves getting the new male hill record at 44 meters and Emma Russell getting the female record at 39.5!

Sunday was even a bigger day for these athletes as they only competed on the K70 and jumped in front of 9,000 plus people cheering them on! The conditions on the hill were a little tricky as there was a slight tailwind on the hill, but athletes did excellent skiing in it. After the normal competition, Emma Russell, Eva Minotte, and Sawyer Graves qualified for the long-standing jump. Eva and Sawyer made it to the second round of 6 jumpers.

“As a coach, I am very proud of all the athletes who made the trip and all the hard work they put in. The training and their focus during the competition while jumping with such a big crowd cheering them on was impressive.” -Garrett Fisk

Freeskiing

January 23 and 24th Steamboat Resort and SSWSC hosted and IFSA Big Mountain Regional Event on the East Face venue. SSWSC had over 40 skiers and riders competing in all age groups from U12 to 15-18. SSWSC top finishes included: Sydney Soard (2nd, U12 Ski Female), Ila Ladrow (4th U12 Ski Female), Adam Lilly (1st, U12 Snowboard Male), Ellie Reynolds (2nd 12-14 Ski Female), Mary McLarnon (3rd, 12-14 Ski Female), Izzy Cerasoli (4th 12-14 Ski Female), Izzy Hamric (2nd 12-14 Snowboard Female), Ava Lilly (3rd 12-14 Snowboard Female), Darian Squires (2nd 12-14 Ski Male), Bode Wellstone (2nd 12-14 Snowboard Male), Cooper Malia (3rd 12-14 Snowboard Male) and Sal Malone (4th 15-18 Ski Male).
SSWSC Freeskiing athletes have a very full competition schedule for the remainder of the season with events this weekend in Copper and Ski Cooper and a National event at Aspen Highlands. Stay tuned for more updates.

Snowboarding

Two of the Senior Team Snowboard athletes traveled to Mammoth, CA with coach Maddy Schaffrick at the end of January. They were there for 9 days with 3 days of slopestyle competitions.

The first competition was a USASA and US Ski and Snowboard collaborative event called Future’s Tour. Jackie Clemente earned himself a 5th place finish, which qualified him for the Revolution Tour Series (snowboard freestlye Noram) for the rest of the season. His run included a frontside toedeo and switch-frontside, double underflip with technical rail tricks to match.

The final 2 events were both Revolution Tours, where Jesse Hamric made finals in the second event and earned himself 10th place. It has been several years since a Steamboat snowboarder has qualified for finals at a slopestyle Rev Tour, and to say it was a feat is an understatement. The runs landed in finals would have held their own at any slopestyle World Cup this year. Four of Jesse’s competitors threw triple-corks in finals. Jesse’s run included technical rail tricks, a frontside double-cork underflip and a switch-frontside 1080.
The results Jackie and Jesse earned have set them up very well for the rest of this season and seasons to come. Their next stop will be at Aspen Buttermilk for the 3rd Revolution Tour of the season, February 12-15. They will both be participating in the Slopestyle and Big Air competitions on the X Games course.

Besides the great results, amazing riding took place for both of them in between contests.
Keep crushing it boys!!
Send them good vibes for Aspen!
