SYNC Cup Day 1

This was the fifth qualifying race out of 6 total, the first slalom qualifier, for the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Rocky/Central U16 Championships. Conditions were extremely challenging on the already difficult Howelsen Hill, with yesterday’s slush turned frozen and mixed with the new snow. It was like skiing on ball bearings and really challenged the skier’s balance as the snow was different on each gate it seemed, with driving snow and poor visibility making it more difficult. It led to times that were more spread out than normal, but some skiers made some great moves. The pressure is palpable for those skiers who need one more result to qualify (their 3 best results out of the 6 races are used).

WOMEN
1 Taylor Hoyt SSCV 1:30.31
2 Riley Grosdidier SSWSC 1:32.78 With 1st, 1st and 2nd it has been an impressive qualifying series for her
3 Tianna Bruce SSCV 1:34.78
5 Jaelie Hovey SSWSC 1:35.95
12 Katya Thurston SSWSC 1:40.71 This result really helped her in her quest for a Junior Champs spot, skied gutsy at the top and smart at the bottom
23 Nicole Nolting SSWSC 1:45.88
48 Margot Schmitz SSWSC 2:08.92

MEN
1 Apollo Powell SSCV 1:23.45
2 Tyler Thomas SSWSC 1:24.25 Showed great speed but a couple mistakes kept him from the top spot
3 Nick Kirwood SSCV 1:25.60
9 Nick Orfanakis SSWSC 1:28.39
13 Colin Kagan SSWSC 1:28.73 Another big move up through the field, ranked 39th at the start
20 Luke Olson SSWSC 1:32.61 Great skiing from Luke, looking for another good race tomorrow to earn a championship spot

SYNC Cup Day 2
Today was the final day of U16 Championships qualifying at the SYNC Cup slalom races at Howelsen Hill. The sun finally came out, and it shone brightly for Luke Olson and Maren Elvidge, the skiers most in need of a strong finish in order to make the team. Maren finished in the top 30 and Luke in the top 20, good enough for both to make the cut. In all, SSWSC qualified 19 skiers to compete at Winter Park in the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Rocky/Central U16 Championships on March 4-10. Here are the qualifiers:

GIRLS: Isabelle Washburn, Riley Grosdidier, Marissa Drobek, Jaelie Hovey, Nicole Nolting, Caroline Gilchrist, Emi Cooper, Natalia Tatge, Katya Thurston, Ryli Adrian and Maren Elvidge
BOYS: Cooper Puckett, Jordan Simon, Tyler Thomas, Nick Orfanakis, Colin Kagan, Charlie Welch, Karl Westermeyer and Luke Olson

Today’s race highlights included Luke Olson’s 20th place finish when he needed a good finish and 3 top 10 finishers from Steamboat (Jordan Simon 3rd, Nick Orfanakis in 7th and Colin Kagan in 9th) on the boy’s side, and on the girls side Jaelie Hovey won the 2nd run to move up to 9th after a major mistake in the first run, Katya Thurston with a huge move up from 34th to 11th place and Elvidge’s 30th place finish when she needed it in order to qualify.
