Alum Cael McCarthy Wraps Up Season and Remembers his Coach and Freeski Director Andy Michnay

SSWSC Freeski Team alum Cael McCarthy wrapped up the 2024-2025 season strong with a win at the Winsport Calgary NorAm, securing silver in the overall NorAm Cup. He had hoped to defend his 2023-2024 NorAm gold, but with the final event in Mammoth canceled due to wind in March 2025, he finished just 4 points shy of reclaiming the title.
Cael was named to the Stifel U.S. Freeski Halfpipe Rookie Team in May 2024, earning World Cup spots for the 24-25 season. He competed in World Cups around the world, including Cardrona, NZ; Copper, CO; Secret Garden, China; Aspen, CO; and Calgary, Canada. He came close to finals in several events, with his best result being 20th, and is currently ranked 20th on the world circuit.
Cael says, “This season didn’t end the way I wanted missing Mammoth, but I’m still really stoked on my skiing. My World Cup results might not show it, but I’m happy with how I’ve progressed—pushing bigger tricks and stepping up my game. Being on the US Ski Team has been a dream since I was a kid, and it’s such an honor to ski alongside so many incredible athletes. But honestly, the friendships and the good times are what make this sport so special”.
Like so many in Steamboat, Cael lost two friends this season, and their passing has had a profound impact on him.
Jesse Hamric, who passed away in July 2024, was friend. Even though he was a snowboarder, he and Cael grew up playing sports together and often crossed paths at competitions and training camps. “Jesse was always up for a good time, and we had a lot of laughs together.” #LoveLikeJesse
Andy Michnay, who passed in January 2025, was Cael’s primary coach for many years. “Andy was my guy—the one I confided in and who always inspired me. Losing him has been really tough for me and so many others, but I’ve carried his love for the sport with me all season. His influence has pushed me to keep going, work harder, and ski with the same passion he always brought.”
