Young Jump Nordic Combined Athletes Compete at Norge Jump Complex for the Junior National Qualifier

The Jump/Nordic Combined crew embarked on a memorable journey to Fox River Grove, Illinois, for an enriching training experience and two days of thrilling competitions. Did you know? The Norge ski jumping complex, a significant part of our trip, was built by Carl Howelsen before he ventured to Steamboat and constructed Howelsen Hill!

14 SSWSC athletes travel to Norge from U10s to U16s and two coaches for the 120th Annual Winter Ski Jump Tournament Junior National Qualifier (JNQ) and US Cup Event. The team was fortunate to have some excellent Midwest winter weather. SSWSC definitely showed up and proved to everyone that all their hard training has paid off. This competition is also a very fun event for athletes as they get to jump in front of 5,000 people who come from all around the Chicago area to watch kids fly through the air

For our first day of competition, athletes jumped all the hills from the HS5,10,25,40,70. Hazel Keller landed in 3rd place on the 5-meter hill. Hazel then stepped up, jumped the 25-meter hill, and landed herself a 4th-place spot. Clara Keller then crushed it on the 25-meter hill and brought home the first-place metal.

Moving up to the 40-meter hill, where the U14 athletes showed their hard work had paid off—Charlotte Fleming took 1st place, followed by Clara Keller in 3rd and Ellie Freidman in 4th. The U14 boys also showed up, with Owen Trimble landing in 2nd. Owen is also a new member of SSWSC this past fall. A big pack of SSWSC athletes followed him with Theo Givnish in 3rd, Arthur Keller in 4th, Langdon Devin in 5th, Fritz Gamber in 6th, Ike Fieges in 10th, Connor Vanoveren in 12th, and Max Aljanich in 13th.

The team had two excellent conditions for two days of competitions on the 70-meter. The first day was a Junior National qualifier, and day two was a US Cup and Junior National qualifier. We did have to battle some tailwinds both days, but the athletes powered through it and crushed it. On Saturday, Charlotte Fleming took 3rd place for U16 females. For U16 males, Miles Warnke brought home the 1st place spot! Owen Trimble ended up in 6th, Everett Baldwin in 7th, Fritz Gamber in 8th, Theo Givnish in 9th, Langdon Devin in 10th, Arthur Keller in 12th, and Connor Vanoveren in 14th.

On our second day of jumping the 70 meters, Charlotte Fleming had a great day, getting 2nd place in the U16 female class. For the U16 males, Owen Trimble landed in 3rd place, Fritz Gamber in 4th, Theo Givnish in 5th, Langdon Devin in 6th, Arthur Keller in 10th, and Connor Vanoveren in 11th. For the U20 males/US Cup class, Miles Warnke placed 8th, and Everett Baldwin placed 10th.

Coach Garrett Fisk was proud of his athletes, “Most of the U14 athletes jumped up in the U16 class on the bigger hill and crushed it. The tower they climbed was 150 feet tall!”

The coaches take great pride in the athletes and are thrilled with their performance! Witnessing these competitors display remarkable resilience and maintain composure while performing before an audience of over 5,000 is truly a gift. Keep up the excellent work!
