Young Snowboarders Dominate Boardercross Races in Copper Mountain

The Junior and Devo snowboard team spent January 31-February 3 at the Copper Mountain Boardercross competition. Nearly every SSWSC athlete from the Junior and Devo Teams joined the event. The team had a private pizza party in the village. Athletes took turns cheering eachother on at the top as the competition rotated through the age groups. Eight athletes raced for their first time and several just started snowboarding last season! Boardercross Olympians and now coaches Alex Deibold (who is also Snowboard Program DIrector) and Mick Dierdorff prepped boards at the top of the venue and gave advice, words of encouragement, and first bumps in the start gate to the athletes. The team trained for one day followed by three individual race days.

Props to our Grommet Boys who showed the highest level of sportsmanship to their Summit County competitors in the start gate. Everyone walked away with new friends after this weekend!

Also shout out to our Menehune Boys who dominated their age groups to take all the podium spots every day of racing. They’ve been focused during training and spent several practices working hard on their technique in our own Boardercross start section at Howelsen Hill.
