Ethan and McKenzie Maines Win U16 Jump and Nordic Combined Events at Junior Championship Qualifier

Sixty-five ski jumping and nordic combined athletes from the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club and the Park City Ski & Snowboard Club gathered at Howelsen Hill last weekend for the Larry Johnson Memorial Junior Championship Qualifier #1. The event offered jumping and nordic combined competitions for classes U10 through U20, with the U16 class being the first qualifier for the national Ski Jumping & Nordic Combined Junior Championships. The events offered beautiful conditions on Friday night for the large hills but snow and windy conditions on Saturday for the small jumps and NC cross-country skate races at Romick Arena.

Standouts in the U16 class were the brother/sister combo of Ethan and McKenzie Maines, who each won the jumping and Nordic combined for their respective events. Rounding out the jumping podiums in the U16 female class were Sadie McCrank (PCSS) in second and Piper Mouttet (SSWSC) in third. For the U16 males, Nico Bowdre (SSWSC) took the silver and Kaden Graham (SSWSC) the bronze. For U16 nordic combined female, Charlotte Fleming (SSWSC) was second and Sadie McCrank (PCSS) third. For U16 nordic combined male, upcomer, Miles Warnke (SSWSC) grabbed the silver and Kaden Graham (SSWSC) won his second bronze of the weekend. Full results can be HERE.

The second and final Junior Championship qualifier will be held in Park City, UT at the Utah Olympic Park on January 31 and February 1. The Junior Championships will be held in Park City, UT during the last week of February.

Next, the SSWSC Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined teams will travel to Fox River Grove, Ill for the world-famous Norge Tournament, on January 24 and 25, 2025.
