Utah Invitational and Soldier Hollow Super JNQ

The SSWSC XC Program brought 33 athletes to Soldier Hollow for a two day competition on the 2002 Olympic Nordic Trails. The event is billed as the SOHO Super JNQ and is the second largest Junior XC event in the nation. This year there was an additional twist, as the University of Utah hosted collegiate races also. This gave our U18 and U20 athlete’s starts against Western Collegiate athletes. Field sizes were 4 to 5 times larger than a normal regional race. Ski Clubs from all across the Western United States came to compete.

Friday, 2/14, was the first day of racing, with a 5/10k Interval Start Freestyle. Top SSWSC XC finish in the men’s 10k was Chase High, in 39 place, 5th U20. There were 160 starters. First for the SSWSC XC in the women’s 5k was Ellory Kearns, in 40th place, 5th U20. Two seconds behind her was Grace Zanni in 42nd, 3rd place U16, podium finisher. There were 223 starters. In the boy’s 5k, SSWSC’s, Griff Rillos, gained a second place finish and a spot atop the podium. There were 102 starters. The U14 girl’s race, saw SSWSC athlete, Nikita Andre, slip into 4th place, out of a field size of 65. U12 female, Shea Sias, matched her teammates result with a 4th place. U14 skier, Henry Magill, notched an 11th place finish, from a field size of 60. Tristan Thrasher was the club’s lone winner on the day, as he took the U12 boy’s race. Jett Brosterhous took 4th place in the boy’s U10 race.

For all age groups Mass Start Classic races were scheduled for Saturday. With artificial snow and warming air, Klister wax on order for ski preparation to gain maximum grip. SSWSC’s Sidney Barbier was the club’s top finisher in the female 10k, placing 38th, 9th U18. Wally Magill was the club’s top U18/20 finisher in the men’s 10k, in 39th place, 5th U18. In the girl’s U16 5k race, Heidi Andre placed 22nd for a top SSWSC finish. Griff Rillos, again secured 2nd place with a strong performance in the boy’s U16 5k race. Nikita Andre finished 10th in the girls’ U14 3k. Henry Magill and Campbell McLaren, went 17th and 19th in the boy’s U14 3k. Tristan Thrasher came into the stadium in first place, but was nipped at the line, by Summit skier Landon Laverdierre, and finished second on the day. The U12 girl’s race saw SSWSC’s Tig Loomis grab 4th place and teammate Shea Sias finish 6th. Jett Brosterhous took an impressive 2nd place in the boy’s U10 race.

Snowboarding

Our SSWSC Freestyle Snowboard Team went to Winter Park this last weekend to compete in a Slopestyle competition and absolutely crushed it!!

7 athletes competed and I was the traveling coach. We went down early Friday (Feb 14) morning and were able to train on the competition courses before the event on Saturday (Feb 15). The weather was beautiful and sunny there on Friday, just like we heard it was here. Saturday afternoon dealt us challenging wind gusts, but our athletes were able to adjust their runs in order to adapt and succeed.

Results
Aimee Wild - 8&9 yr old girls - 1st
Reed Van Ness - 10&11 yr old boys - 1st
Aaron Wild - 10&11 yr old boys - 3rd
Braden Duty - 12&13 yr old boys - 11th
Jackie Clemente - 14&15 yr old men - 1st
Jesse Hamric - 14&15 yr old men - 2nd
Johnny Duty - Open class men - 1st

The results speak for themselves. They are overall the best results we’ve had at a slopestyle comp this year, but the success of the weekend went so much further than these results. Every athlete accomplished personal feats that exemplified not only how hard they’ve all been working, but also how passionate they all are for snowboarding.

Aimee Wild - As a 9 year old girl, went bigger than all the boys her age and got impressively creative with her grabs.
Reed Van Ness - Landed his frontside 360 for the first time in competition and won his second ever slopestyle competition.
Aaron Wild - It was his first contest back since breaking his collar bone in the beginning of January, and had to show restraint because he wasn’t cleared to spin yet.
Braden Duty - Flawlessly landed his cork, backside 720 off of the biggest jump he had ever attempted it off of.
Jackie Clemente - Landed his first double backflip of the season and showed his immense mental growth when approaching competition.
Jesse Hamric - Learned backside 1080’s and attempted his first ever ever backside 1260.
Johnny Duty - Put together a top-to-bottom run that requires so much skill and style, I still have trouble wrapping my head around it. This may be lost to some readers, but his run was as follows: backside lip on a down rail, 50/50 with a frontside 360 off of a flat bar, front-board disaster to switch on an A-frame, switch-back rodeo on the first jump, backside 360 on the second jump, frontside underflip on the third jump

These athletes are just at the beginning of what they’re capable of. Our next competition will be in Keystone this coming weekend (Feb 22). It will be another slopestyle comp and we’re looking to have just as much fun and continue to build off of everything they’re doing.

Freestyle

The U17/U19 mogul skiers just returned from a favorite stop on the Rocky Mountain Freestyle Tour, Telluride. With one day of blue skies before the clouds and snow took over, the athletes were able to take in the amazing San Juans and ski some steeps as well as the mogul course.

It was Anabel Ayad’s week-end as she won all three days of competition, two singles events and one duals. Displaying an amazing amount of mental toughness, Anabel kept her game and focus high as she lay down run after run on the challenging Hermit mogul course, finishing the week-end by winning 5 runs in the duals event.

Ella Walker finished in the top 10 all three days, earning 4th and 3rd in singles and 8th in duals.Katie McGlaflin was just out of the top ten, earning 11th and 12th in singles. Riley Hodges earned 8th in singles.

On the boys side, Xander Tatar-Brown had his best finish to date, earning 4th in duals. Xander also raised his game in singles, finishing 8th with a full twisting back flip on the top air and a huge cork 720 on the bottom. Misha Jensen continued to make progress, winning a dual for the first time and finishing 38th and 43rd in singles. Misha showed great improvement on his 360.

Divisional Championships at Copper are next for the Team.

Colorado Ski Cup
On Thursday and Friday, a Colorado Ski Cup slalom race was held at Howelsen Hill. These races were not originally scheduled in Steamboat, but we picked them up when the other site was not able to host them. The Colorado Ski Cup is the same series as the Holiday Classic races back in December, and the giant slalom races at Steamboat Ski Resort on January 26-27. It is the highest level of regional FIS (internationally scored) racing.

SSWSC athletes did very well on their home hill. Elsie Halvorsen won for the women and Noah Riemenschneider won for the men.  SSWSC athletes stacked the results behind them with a very dominating performance. We celebrated Morgan Kosik’s return to racing after a lot of hard work returning from injury. Ryli Adrian smoked a top 5 2nd run and James Lahrman won the 2nd run to make strong moves up through the rankings.
